It’s no secret that I love a good fashion subscription service. Gwynnie Bee has pretty much changed my life, and I’ve been switching up my handbag selection with RTR Unlimited lately. The newest one I’ve tried is Rocksbox, a jewelry subscription service. For a monthly fee of $19, I can rent and return as much jewelry as I like (with a few limitations). Read on for how it works:

Each Rocksbox comes with three pieces of jewelry, handpicked for you. The items may be ones you added to your Rocksbox “Wishlist” (either on the site or by commenting with the hashtag #wishlist on their Instagram account); or they may be complementary items picked by Rocksbox based on your taste. My most recent box had one item I specifically requested (a statement necklace by Perry Street); one I think I might have tagged on Insta (a sparkly large scale bracelet); and one I never added to my list (a delicate Gorjana necklace with a tiny pendant – the size of a grain of rice).

Accessorizing is not my strong suit, so the idea of a rotating jewelry wardrobe is appealing: A good way to try out new styles and see how I can incorporate them into my wardrobe in real life. Rocksbox does just that.

Pros:

• Trying out new pieces and styles (for longer than a minute or two): I was skeptical about the oversized rhinestone bracelet above when I first pulled it out of the box, but by the end of the day it had really grown on me.
• Variety: The only jewelry I’m attached to is my wedding set.  It is fun to switch up my fashion jewelry with my mood.
• Shine Spend: You get $10 a month to spend on any of the items you have at home that you want to keep.  If you use the credit, you are essentially only paying $9 a month for the rental service.
• Trying pieces out of my price range: My first box had a gorgeous Jenny Bird collar that I have been lusting after ever since I saw it in the Covet Fashion game (my guilty pleasure). Spending over $100 on jewelry is definitely not in my budget right now, but I loved wearing it for a few weeks.
• Responsive: I don’t have pierced ears, and I noted that when I signed up.  They have not sent me any earrings, which is awesome because it would be a wasted item for me.
• Unlimited returns: I can keep each box as long as I want to – no due dates or late fees!
• The packaging is really cute and personalized.  Each box contains a card with a note about how your set of three was picked.  Even when something misses the mark, the attention to detail softens the blow.

Cons:

• Not totally in control: I’m always up for an adventure, but when a stylist-selected piece falls flat, the feeling that disappointment could have been avoided if all the items were picked out by me is hard to avoid.
• No individual returns: Gwynnie Bee may have spoiled me – I am so used to being able to send back the pieces I don’t love immediately, and hold on to the ones I do for as long as I want.  With Rocksbox, you have to send back the set as a whole unless you want to buy the piece you hang on to.  If I could send back items individually, the too-small Gorjana necklace would already be on its way back.  As it is, I have to hold onto it until I’m ready to send the statement necklace I’m currently wearing back.
• Selection: There are a lot of items, but I want more bold, unique styles than they currently have.  Not having pierced ears does cut into my selection quite a bit though, so I think this would be less of an issue for more people.  And there are new pieces being added all the time!
