As someone who has been working in fashion for almost a decade – and into fashion for even longer – one thing that I always enjoy is spotting those rare pieces that will both always be classic, and sometimes also be the *it* item of the moment. The little black dress comes to mind – it never goes out of style, but it still frequently surges to even greater popularity as a seasonal trend. There aren’t many styles that qualify though, because it is hard to walk that fine line between versatile enough to be timeless and strong enough to be a trend.

So I was really happy to see that the Jacket of Spring 2022 is another such piece, and one you might already have in your closet: The trench coat.

I indeed already had this Baacal trench from 2020 in my own closet, and I’ve worn it a lot this season. I often wax poetic about my love for Baacal – especially their luxe outerwear – and this jacket is no exception. The cut is perfect, the fit is spot on, and the subtle iridescent finish of the taffeta gives the classic beige hue a fun twist. This is definitely an investment piece, and one you’ll get a lot of wear out of for years to come. Unfortunately, most sizes of this particular trench are now sold out, so I’m rounding up more great plus trenches that are in stock and available now (including these gorgeous satin trenches from Baacal that just dropped.)

If you are looking to support another cool independent plus size brand, the Brilliant Trench from See Rose Go is a great choice. Their pieces are really nice quality and last for years, so this is an investment piece too. And if you want a trench that is just as classic but packs more visual punch, this rich red version is just the one.  I just got mine in the mail and I can’t wait to try it on!

I’m happy to see that Mango is finally incorporating plus sizes into their main line (instead of their separate Violeta label they originally had for plus), because now the styles we’re getting are the same as the straight size versions (one of the main things I’ve been pushing for since #plussizeplease). Their assortment of trench coats this spring is one of the best I’ve seen. This style in particular is pitch-perfect and comes in sizes XS-4XL.

If you are looking for more of a statement piece, this print trench from indie label Ofuure is a great choice (and on sale now too). Make sure to check out the size chart before ordering though – they go up to XXXL, but it looks like extended straight sizing, and doesn’t correspond to traditional plus sizes.

If you are looking for a true high end luxury coat a la the classic Burberry (which is only available in sizes up to XXL), check out Lafayette 148 (which has true plus sizing up to 3x), or Marina Rinaldi, an Italian luxury label that has options both classic and with interesting twists (I’ve been lusting after this gold leather trench from the moment I saw it).

Whatever your trench style, you can rest assured that you will get a lot of wear out of it this year. Just like wide leg jeans last year, all I have to do is walk down the street in NYC to see that it is THE it outerwear of the moment. And the classic silhouette means that whenever you are ready to rotate out this trend in a year or two, just put it in your closet and come back for it later – because a good one will never go out of style.
