One Red Dress, Three Ways

We all know the value and versatility of a LBD, but a LRD (little red dress) can get just as much mileage while making a major statement.  This ribbed midi dress from Tibi is a simple silhouette, but the semi-sheer finish and the shimmering fabric makes it feel special.  I styled it three ways, wearing a black bra and high-waisted shorties underneath all looks to play up the sheerness.  If you want more coverage, just wear a cami and leggings (for the cold months), or a nude slip (to take it into spring).

Look 1: Structure and Sheer

The soft silhouette of this dress calls for the counter-point of architectural details.  I added a sharp-shouldered cape blazer and column-heeled ankle boots, and it was ready to go.

I wore this for a day out downtown, but with a nude slip, this could even work for a fashion-forward office look.

For makeup, I went with a nude lip and minimal mascara.  My raw pyrite necklace (the first gift my husband ever gave me after he saw how much I loved it at street fair on one of our earliest dates!) kept the hard vs. soft theme going, and was a perfect sentimental touch.

Look 2:  All in for a Night Out

To show off the sparkle of this dress, I wanted to get some pictures in the sun. Worn on its own, the sheerness is very apparent.   This is great for a night out, or a sexy date look – Valentines Day is coming up!

This holographic gold crossbody from Rebecca Minkoff hit the light just right, and works wonderfully for a night out (shoulder straps are key!).  My Matt Bernson Royale pumps finished the look off – I love the unique heel on this twist on a classic.

I added red gloss with a hint of glitter to keep the theme going, a swipe of Stila highlighter, and holographic earrings.  Piling on the glitz is not a problem!  All together, this felt like a mix of old school Hollywod glam and modern style, and I felt amazing.

Look 3: Adding Some Edge

To take this dress in a different direction, I switched out the heels for harness moto booties, and added a cropped faux leather jacket (from FTFsimilar here).

A dark lip and heavy eyeliner took it all the way from glam to grunge.  My favorite eye beanie was the perfect cheeky touch to cap it off.

This is a look that is right in my comfort zone, style-wise (if a bit risky with the see through dress).  I’d wear this for a night out at divey spots on the LES, and do my best not to put my feet up on a raggedy sofa so everyone could see these perfect boots from EEight by Miista (the chain harness is removable too – so these are just as versatile as this little red dress!)
