OOTD: Flouncy vs. Structured

For the first pleasant day of NYFW, I decided to go for bold color.  I’ve been enamored with this flouncy skirt silhouette since I saw it on the runway at Nicole Miller, but it wasn’t something I was ready to commit to.  It  was perfect to get from Gwynnie Bee as part of my endless rotating closet.  I loved the vibrant cobalt hue, but it had some fit issues, so this turned out to be the right choice for a wear-once item.

The scuba knit provided structure to contrast the flippy hem.  That structure meant it was a little boxy through the waist, so I added a wide wrap belt to adjust the fit.  It was a bit clingier on my stomach than I usually wear, but in the spirit of body positivity and trying to push past fear of a visible belly, I decided to rock it anyways.

Friendly reminder: Body positivity is something even people who seem super confident have to keep working on! It’s not something you can just achieve and put on a shelf; you have to keep putting effort in.  Everyone has moments of insecurity, and that is okay.  The important thing is to keep working.

I was a bit self conscious in the morning, but as the day wore on and I got compliment after compliment, I was happy I pushed myself.  The thing I was so worried about was a non-factor in the minds of friends, coworkers, and strangers.  Fashion isn’t about hiding, whether than means hiding your insecurities or hiding behind “safe” clothes.

My accessories were the perfect complement to the feminine flare of the dress. This Marie Odile for Soltek Lautrec envelope clutch provided an architectural contrast, and pointy toe flats with an ankle strap bridged the dainty/bold gap.
