Where to Shop for the Best Plus Size Trenchcoats

Spring feels like it is finally here (and thank goodness, because all grey, gloomy weather has been rough), so naturally I’m thinking about spring layering. The reign of the trench as the fashion girl it-jacket continues this season, something I am decidedly here for. This silhouette is one of the few true fashion classics, so you might already have a favorite trench in your closet ready to pull out. I used to long to own a Burberry for just that reason, but their largest size, an XXL, is about the equivalent of a 16 in Lane Bryant sizing. Fortunately, the plus and size inclusive market has stepped up with some amazing options, so whether you are looking for an investment piece to wear forever, or just want to add another variation to your wardrobe, I’ve rounded up all the best places to find trenchcoats in plus sizes, from designer to budget.

As always, if you find this helpful and end up purchasing something, it is SO appreciated if you could use my links/codes. Using them to shop costs you nothing and supports the work I do here – specifically being able to dedicate the time needed to do big researched guides like this one!

The 17 best places to shop plus size trenches:

Hilary MacMillan (up to size 4x): I’ve been admiring this Toronto based designer’s pieces from afar for years now, so I was excited to get a chance to try on her signature trenchcoats during her NYC pop up this Fashion Week. Seeing them in person, I was impressed with the quality immediately, and even more so once I tried my first one on. I love the thoughtful details (like the fact that each jacket comes with both a tie belt and a buckle belt for added versatility), and the overall effect is so chic and luxe that I get compliments and questions about my jacket every time I wear this embossed grey vegan leather version out in NYC.

On 24th by Jordie (up to 3x + custom sizing): If you are looking for a cool designer option, I can’t recommend On 24th by Jordie enough. I love her unique, fashion forward designs so much I wore one of her trenches to speak on the NYFW: The Talks panel on size diversity that I co-created with Elle.com Beauty Director Danielle James!

Baacal (up to size 28W): This is another gorgeous designer option for beautiful trench coats, created by CFDA designer Cynthia Vincent. My Baacal pieces often end up in heavy rotation, and the timeless cuts and high quality fabrics hold up to the wear (I have a lightweight wool car coat from them from 2019 that I still wear regularly, and it looks just as good as when I got it).

Never Fully Dressed (up to size 24): This London based brand is fast becoming a favorite for joyful clothing, with the types of vibrant colors and patterns not often found in plus. This fun vibe carries over into their outerwear too, with options like hot pink leather and zodiac prints.

Tanya Taylor (up to size 3x): One of my favorite NYC designers, Tanya Taylor is known for her fun designs and use of hand painted prints, and I love seeing how that translates to her limited selection of outerwear. I saw someone wearing this gingham colorblock print trench downtown the other day and now it is even more of a wardrobe want – it looks SO good in person!

byVinnik (up to size 5x): For full-on maximalists and lovers of ornate statement pieces, this luxury label is a goldmine. While their jackets aren’t trenchcoats in the most technical sense, they provide a great alternative for someone who wants to add some fun drama to their outerwear. I tried on their a few of their gorgeous Parisian coats and can confirm that these pieces are even more stunning in person. I was able to get a reader discount too: Use code CURVILY for 15% off on their site.

Lane Bryant (up to size 40): If you are looking for something with a broader size range and on the more affordable side, but with quality that will still hold up, I suggest checking out Lane Bryant (I have a trench from 2017 from them that is still in great shape). They have a few different colors and styles on their site right now, including this bold pink and a fun denim option.

Universal Standard (Up to size 40): With one of the broadest size ranges on the market, Universal Standard is a great place to start when looking for well made options from a truly inclusive brand (they carry 00-40!) In addition to trenches from their main label, they have an excellent trench coat in their limited Henning x US collab, with a weather resistant version of the star piece from Lauren Chan’s luxury label Henning (which was acquired by Universal Standard in 2023). This trench has been in heavy rotation for me since I got it a few months ago, and I feel like I’ll be wearing it for years to come.

Target (up to 4x): One of my go-to spots for affordable outerwear, Target has seasonal availability when it comes to trenchcoats (aka if you love something, don’t wait too long – for the most part with them, once something is out of stock, it is gone for good). Even though I don’t need any more trenches myself, this buttery yellow linen number is currently calling my name, so I might just have take my own advice and get it now!

J.Crew (up to 3x): A lot of people still don’t know J.Crew offers plus sizes (put plus in stores guys!), but their options are great if you are looking for their particular brand of luxe prep with a modern edge. Their Icon Trench, with water repellent fabric and all the style bells and whistles you’d want in a good trenchcoat, is on my to-try list.

ASOS (up to size 26): This British site has long been a go-to of mine when looking for something specific – their vast assortment up the odds of actually finding what I am looking for, whether it is from their own house brands or other UK labels that can be hard to find on this side of the pond. Their prices tend to be pretty reasonable (especially during their frequent sales), and they are a great option for international shoppers too, as they ship to many countries worldwide.

Ulla Popken (up to size 38): This plus size label has a sizable selection of outerwear in general, and that goes for trench coats too. With a variety of cuts, colors, and fabrics (including some fun faux leather options), they are worth a look.

Nordstrom (up to size 3x): Nordstrom is one of my go-to places when it comes to looking for an item in particular, as they tend to have a good assortment of brands and options in plus, and ranging from budget to full on luxury (like Marina Rinaldi’s gorgeous Italian made outerwear) to more accessible brands.

Mango (up to 4xl): Since adding plus sizes a few years ago, Mango’s extended size assortment has been steadily expanding, and I’ve noticed that they tend to have at least one or two great jacket options, no matter the specific style I’m looking for.

Talbots (up to size 24): If you like classic options, this is a great place to check out. In fact, they tend to offer pieces that are a little too classic for my own personal taste, but they do have some solid workwear options, along with the occasional fun outerwear piece that is more statement and less staple.

Lafayette 148 (up to 3x): If you are looking for clean lines, luxury label Lafayette 148 is a great bet. Their coats and jackets are very sharp, and that includes trenches. There is only one plus size trench on their site right now (this cool taffeta number), but this is a brand to keep in mind for true luxury in sizes up to 3x.

Karen Millen (up to size 20): This UK designer label doesn’t have the best size range (they only go up to the US equivalent of 20 in their plus sizes), but they do have some really cool designs, so they are worth a look if you are in their range.

Honorable mentions:

Even though – bafflingly – there are no plus trench styles in stock on these sites right now, they are all on my list of places to check out if I am shopping for one, so I want to include them here for future reference:

I’m including a slideshow of a few of my favorite plus size trenches on the market right now too, so click through to check them out – this roundup includes a few one-offs from brands that don’t have a good enough selection to make the best of list too!
