Trend DIY: The Mixed Dress

Ever since I saw the “mixed dress” mini trend at NYFW, I’ve been keeping an eye out for inspiration.  This look, which evokes one dress layered on top of another and falling off the shoulder, has been cropping up in street style as well.  I wanted to try the look myself, but this style hasn’t yet made its way to plus labels.  Fortunately, in a stroke of pattern mixing inspiration, I realized this can be easily DIY’ed – no sewing required!

To get this look at home, all you need is a sleeveless or strappy dress, and a lightweight scarf to layer over it.  This Prabal Gurung for Lane Bryant scarf has a cool fringe-y edge, so I tied it on the side to show it off.

I felt right at home with the early morning desert flowers.

The patterns or colors of the scarf and dress do not need to match – just complement each other.  I liked the similarity of palettes of these two together, and the difference in print and scale.  I’ll be using this easy DIY styling trick again with other dresses – it is a fun way to mix prints or to spice up an LBD.  Bonus: Can be used to cover cleavage for dresses where the neckline is doing more than you’d like it to!
