Affordable Plus Size Cashmere and Silk? Putting Quince’s Plus Sizes to the Test

I’ve been hearing about Quince for a few years now – mostly through readers asking me for a review – and it has been on my to-try list for the last year. I love the idea of a direct to consumer model making luxury materials more affordable, so I was delighted when they reached out about doing a partnership for a review, as it gave me the opportunity to really do a deep dive and spend time wear-testing their clothes. This post is sponsored by Quince. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own, and I only recommend things I honestly like and wear myself.

For this review, I chose to focus on natural fibers, as that is something I’ve often seen missing from plus size fashion – and I specifically get requests for “where to shop for plus size fabrics in 100% natural fibers” all the time. So for this review, I chose four pieces from their site that represent the hard-to-find types of natural fabrics Quince offers, so I could really see what the quality and weight was like for myself. I chose a thick 100% cotton sweater, a lighter-weight 100% Mongolian cashmere sweater, and two silk pieces: A more workwear-ready silk tank, and a sleek silk slip dress. For the silk pieces, I tried them in a 3X based on Quince’s measurement chart. I am typically a 2X, but for silk I’d always rather have it be a little floaty over a little bit too tight, so I went with a 3X. I did find that the 3X was a little big in the slip dress but I still really like the vibe.

To make sure I was getting a complete review, I did a wear test of all the items before I shot photos of them, both to see how they look on the second wear, and to make sure they are durable and hold up. Obviously, I didn’t torture the fabrics – things like silk and cashmere are a little bit more delicate by nature – but I also didn’t baby them. Instead, I wore them in my regular life to see how they hold up to every day wear.

Overall, I was super impressed with the results, both for fit and for quality. Read on to get into the details of what I liked (and what I’d change) for each piece.

Silk tank:

The moment I tried this one on, I knew it was hit. If I was still working in a corporate office environment, I’d be buying this in every color immediately! Seriously, it is just that good. But let me back up a minute to get into why:

If you’ve never had a great real silk shirt, you might wonder what all the fuss is about – like is it really that different from your average satin? I used to think the same, but finding my first beautiful plus size silk blouse after a lifetime of never having one made me a total silk convert. There is just something really luxurious and lovely about the look and feel of a high quality silk satin, but that usually comes with a hefty price point. Most true silk shirts retail for at least $100, and often a lot more: A similar silk tank from Lafayette 148, for example, is currently $498!

Knowing how much real silk usually costs, I was honestly a little skeptical whether Quince’s $59 silk tank could really look and feel comparable. But the moment I opened my package and tried it on, any skepticism was gone. This is truly a beautiful silk shirt for a fraction of the price.

Quince’s washable silk is not 100% silk, but a 90% silk/10% spandex combo that really delivers the full look and feel of 100% silk, just with a little stretch built in (perfect if you have a fuller bust!) I sized up one size to a 3x to accommodate my bust, but with that stretch I probably could have gone with my usual 2x without an issue. I do really like the flow on the 3x though, and I will be keeping this one and wearing it regularly. I paired it with a high waisted black trouser here to show how well it would work for the office (like I said above, this is the type of piece you’d want in every color if you are in a formal or business casual dress code environment), but it also looks great worn with jeans or popped under a cozy cardigan. Untucked, this silk tank hits mid-hip, so you have options when it comes to whether to wear it long or tuck it in. The moderate v neck is just right for the office: It visually breaks up the top so it is not just an expanse of chest, but with no real cleavage (and I generally have cleavage in pretty much anything, so this is a true feat in my opinion!)

Overall, I give this one a 10/10 and will absolutely be recommending for plus size workwear and beyond.

Silk slip dress:

I personally think a good slip dress is key to a great wardrobe, and doubly so when it comes to a lush silk satin slip. There’s something so versatile about a piece that can go from sexy date-night-ready, to casual and cool, to workwear appropriate, all just by changing the styling. It is hard to find a good one in plus sizes though, so I was really excited to try this silk slip from Quince

Cut is super important when it comes to getting a slip dress right, and oftentimes when a brand expands into plus sizes, they don’t grade up correctly (meaning they’re not translating the patterns for larger sizes in a way that accurately reflects how bodies work). After trying this dress out, I’m happy to say that is not the case with Quince. This slip dress works so well on my body. It is clearly cut to accommodate busts, bellies, and hips, something that often doesn’t happen for slip dresses that are cut for straighter figures.

Plus size Quince silk slip dress on a real size 18/20 body

The moment I put this dress on, I felt beautiful. I was a little worried that the lightweight fabric was going to read flimsy or cheap, but it does not. It just looks chic and sleek and sexy, and skims over my curves in a way that doesn’t cling or squish (aka THE ideal slip dress effect!) The lightweight silk packs down to basically nothing too, perfect for carry on travel (and it is machine washable!) The only slight drawback of the lighter weight is that with a direct backlight, there can be a teeny bit of sheerness. Only a tiny bit though, and it is not noticeable in any other situation, so as long as you’re not standing directly in front of a light with legs apart, it likely won’t be an issue at all (but I just want to give you the full scoop just in case!)

My only real qualm is with the seam on the side of the dress: There was a little bit of rippling there in some positions. I do think this could be alleviated by getting my regular size 2X instead of the 3x I tried, but it is still really beautiful and I will absolutely be wearing it as is.

Overall, the good far outweighs any minor critiques for this piece, especially at this price point. I appreciate the thoughtful details on this dress, like the adjustable straps and a v-neck that can either have more or less cleavage depending on what you’re looking for. This gorgeous burgundy color is really chic too, and I can see this ending up in regular rotation in my wardrobe: I’ve already worn it twice in the time I’ve had it (including pairing it with the Quince cashmere sweater I’m reviewing below). Now that I know how well this slip dress fits, I’m definitely eyeing some of the other colors too – the deep forest green of my tank is particularly good and would look amazing in this silhouette.

100% cotton sweater:

The first thing I noticed about this fisherman sweater was the weight: This is a SUBSTANTIAL knit! Whereas the silk is super fine and lightweight, this 100% cotton sweater has a heft to it, in the best way. This is just the type of sweater you want for cool fall days and to wear under coats when it gets full-on cold in winter.

I got this sweater in my usual size (2x) and I found the fit to be spot on: The perfect balance of a little boxy and a little body skimming (and somehow even more so when you do a little partial front tuck – I could really see the shape built into the pattern there!) The cotton ribbed knit is cozy, and the fabric is nice against the skin – I wore this with nothing but a bra underneath and there was zero scratchiness!

The vertical box knit is clean and modern, and the style is versatile enough to work with lots of different aesthetics. I wore it casually here with wide leg jeans and a baseball cap, but it looks just as good layered under an oversized blazer for a minimalist look or paired with a flowy skirt for a more boho vibe. I absolutely love this pretty sky blue hue, but it also comes in six other colors and neutrals, including a rich navy and a really pretty camel that would go with pretty much anything.

The 100% organic cotton fabric means this sweater is naturally breathable, so it keeps you warm without the sweatiness that often accompanies thick knits like this when they are made of synthetic materials like polyester. The $49 price point is beyond reasonable, especially considering how well made this sweater is. The reviews online agree too, with a near-perfect 4.8 rating. I’m personally giving it 5 stars, because this is simply a great sweater. I hope they keep this style on the site and add more colors, and I will absolutely be sending readers who ask me about good cotton sweaters to Quince, especially since they also offer 100% cotton sweaters in v-necks, cardigans, and oversized open cardis. And if you want a lighter-weight cotton sweater, they also have a finer rib knit crewneck option in a bunch of colors.

Cashmere sweater:

For me, this one is the piece de la resistance

As someone who has been accurately described as a “shops for a living expert on plus size fashion,” I can tell you with authority and certainty that it is not easy to find cashmere in plus sizes, let alone 100% cashmere

When you do find plus size cashmere, it tends to be either (A) a mostly-poly “cashmere blend;” (B) very pricey (typically at least $150 for a basic sweater); or (C) all of the above! So seeing the $59 price point on this 100% cashmere sweater definitely made me question the quality before I received it – like how good could it really be? Once I got this cashmere sweater in hand, though, I was happily surprised. I think Quince really delivered on its philosophy of high-quality for less with this one.

This cashmere sweater feels like the Platonic ideal of a good sweater. It is a perfect light weight knit, warm and cozy for transitional weather, thin enough for layering year-round, super-soft to the touch, and it fits so, so well!

I got this in my usual size 2X and the fit was honestly spot on and true to size. I am so happy with how the sweater looks on my curves. I originally was planning on getting a different color, but by the time I went to order all of the other colors had sold out (back in stock now, thankfully!), so I ended up going with this neutral oatmeal hue. As someone who loves color, this is not usually my go-to shade, but even in a color that is not my personal favorite, I am in love with this sweater. That’s just how good it is!

The fact that it only costs $59 makes it even better. To be clear, all of the pieces I tried were worthy of an enthusiastic recommendation, but cashmere that feels this luxurious and is not a cheap blend at this price point is really, really impressive. And this is not the only plus size cashmere Quince offers, either: They also have a crew neck version that comes in 10 colors, a cashmere tee, a polo, a big cozy cardigan, and even a chunky fisherman’s sweater, in case you want the vibes of the blue cotton sweater above in lush cashmere.

Overall, I am super impressed with Quince. I think this is going to become one of my go-to recommendations when people are looking for natural fibers and beautiful items they can invest in, especially if they’re looking for a more affordable price point for that investment. I’ve seen this kind of direct-to-consumer luxury model done a lot before, but plus size shoppers are usually excluded. So I’m so happy that Quinn actually expanded their size range and now offers plus sizes up to 3x (the equivalent of a US 24W). I do hope that they expand further – I’d love to see them go to a 4X or 5X – and I hope they increase their plus size assortment, but what they have right now is excellent. And that is especially true when it comes to filling gaps in the plus size market for things that we really can’t get anywhere else at this price point (see: real leather moto jackets for less and $240, structured Italian wool coats for $175, and summer-friendly linen for under $40.)
