Trying the Trend: Camo
My proudest fashion moment from middle school was when I put together a perfectly coordinated urban camo look that consisted of a black tee, a short slinky camo skirt, knee high socks (also in green camo print), and black chunky heeled loafers. 13 year old me was convinced I was killing it, and my classmates agreed – I even got a begrudging nod from the queen mean girl. I wore the look to meet Next (!) at a CD signing (!!) at the local record store (!!!) after school, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t shut up about that experience for months.
Camo has had a couple of fashion moments since then, but I’ve never been tempted to try it again until now – as far as I was concerned, I left the trend on a high note back in 7th grade. But when I saw this Addition Elle camo jacket on the Gwynnie Bee New Arrivals page, I figured it was time to dip my toe back in. The no-commitment nature of my GB subscription takes the risk out of trying a trend I’m not sure about, so I figured the worst case scenario was just tossing it in a pre-paid return bag and getting something new (if you are not familiar with Gwynnie Bee, it is a flat monthly rate unlimited closet – you can wear and send things back as often as you want to get something else you’ve added to your virtual closet sent to you).
Imagine my surprise to find myself wearing this jacket again and again over the course of this month. On my first wear, I went a little simpler than my enthusiastic 13 year old styling, pairing it with ankle jeans and sleek booties for a casual brunch date. Since then, I’ve worn it with black denim and leopard booties, and paired it with a wine colored bodycon (also from Gwynnie Bee) to play with color. I will definitely be sending this piece back when the temps dip too low to wear it on a regular basis – it is hardly a classic I need to make room in my closet for – but I am really enjoying wearing it in the meantime. That ability to have fun with fashion without spending a fortune to buy every piece on a whim is a big reason I’ve been a GB member for over five years now!
