Last weekend we went upstate with a group of friends for a favorite fall tradition: Apple picking.  I love getting out of the city every once in a while, and even the drive up was scenic with the changing fall foliage.  The day started out with less than ideal weather, but by the time we got to the orchard, there was just a low mist hanging over the hills in the distance.

The trees at Masker Orchard had seen their fair share of picking, so it took some perseverance to find the apples we wanted, but our persistence paid off:

Nothing is better than a cold, sweet, perfectly crisp apple straight from the tree.  And thankfully, I had help for getting the apples out of my reach 🙂

After we all filled our bags with apples to take home, we headed to another perennial fave: Warwick Winery.  They have amazing food, including the best wood fired pizza (with sausage, sage, gorgonzola, and caramelized onions), heaping bowls of Prince Edward Island mussels in a garlic wine sauce, and delicious parmesan truffle fries.  The wine tasting at Warwick is a steal, too: $5 for tastes of five wines, a cider, and a cordial (I highly recommend the cherry).  And you get to take the glass home!

All in all, it was a lovely day.  I highly recommend Warwick for a quick escape from NYC.
